A shadow economy for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Followers are urged to message these profiles privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

This medication is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Voice Worries

Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting products of unknown origin.

Based on the social media company, the service has taken down problematic content and banned associated keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with numerous of users, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at home.

After moments of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The seller sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Inside these groups, messages display black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to current cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
