The buzz about the recent awards show has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
